2017 Limited Release Howell Mountain Zinfandel
TASTING NOTE:
Our 2017 Howell Mountain Zinfandel offers aromas of boysenberry, white pepper . On the palate, rich flavors of black cherry are enhanced by brown sugar and nutmeg. The rich fruit and subtle spice make for a fresh and long finish.
WINEMAKER’S NOTES:
Howell Mountain is especially well suited to growing intensely flavored Zinfandel due to the combination of volcanic, iron laden soils and high elevation. The 2,400 feet elevation impacts the microclimate of the site. Large swings between day and night temperatures allow for even ripening and maintaining a vibrant acidity in the grapes. The vines are approximately 39 years old which results in fruit with wonderful intensity of aromas and exceptional concentration of flavor.
2017 was one of the longest and most unique growing seasons in the Napa Valley. The growing season was cooler and wetter compared to previous seasons. With the wetter and cooler conditions, it slowed the grape ripening. Towards the end of summer, we experienced several heat spikes. The heat spikes shocked the grapevines to accelerate ripening or delay ripening depending how ripe the grapes were at the moment. Towards the end of August, the growing season returned to normal and the fruit quality was exceptional. Our Zinfandel was picked in mid-September before the October fires.
